Finnian Hassall

Finnian Hassall is a visual artist based in the UK. Rooted in the rich heritage of Yorkshire and nurtured by the landscapes of the South West of England, Hassall’s work emanates a keen observation through topographical exploration, portraiture and process.
Hassall uses lens based techniques to explore the complexities of life, revealing moments of joy, vulnerability and connection.

II: The sun at home warms better than it does elsewhere, is an exploration of place and personal relationships. The work weaves together the sublime and the vernacular creating a tapestry of daily life in which banality invokes an elevated sense of space. Through this, his aim is to connect beauty and nature with the intrinsic beauty of the central character.

Hassall’s creative approach is influenced by feelings and atmosphere. This emotion-driven perspective permeates all aspects of his work, from conceptual development to execution. It allows him to intuitively capture the essence of his ideas, ensuring they resonate with the intended atmosphere and mood.

The printmaking aspect of Hassall’s production has been particularly transformative. Embracing the potential for mistakes and learning from them has expanded his understanding of how his work can exist in various styles. This flexibility and willingness to experiment has enriched his creative process, allowing his work to evolve organically.

II is a reflection of his gaze—an exploration of themes through a lens defined by emotion and atmosphere. This perspective guides his work, ensuring each element contributes to the overarching narrative and thematic cohesion.
